Greetings from ETC-SV

Feb 16,2007

ETC-SV is currently in full swing. We're in residence at Electronic Arts Redwood Shores and are engaged in two projects. One project is sponsored by the Siemens Foundation and involves collaboration with Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Online. The Siemens Corporation is taking over sponsorship of Spaceship Earth at Epcot Center, and We're working on a project to help support the post-show attractions. Early in the semester, we attended a brainstorming session in Glendale, California, with Disney and Siemens, and We're working on prototypes.

The second project is a collaboration with the International School of the Peninsula, a dual-language immersion school (English-French or English-Mandarin) for K-8 students in Palo Alto. We're developing a class curriculum for their junior high technology classes in which the students make videogames with the Alice 3D Authoring System. We're especially interested in identifying ways to encouragefemale students to continue studies in the sciences. Students have been divided into teams and are creating storyboards for their games. In the next class, they will begin working with Alice.

We also have a wonderful elective course, 'Current Issues in Digital Media and Game Design,' at CMU West (Moffett Field, Mountain View). We've invited ETC alumni and industry professionals to speak about all aspects of the entertainment industry. Ian McCullough (Leapfrog), Ira Fay (Electronic Arts), and Dave Culyba (Electronic Arts) are ETC alumni who have given lectures. Our most recent lecturer was Scott Russell of Diamondhead Ventures, who spoke about venture capital and business creation in Silicon Valley. The class has been invited to companies, too. Randy Nelson, dean of Pixar University, kindly invited us to Pixar for a lecture. Future lecturers include Don Daglow (CEO, Stormfront Studios), Chaim Gingold (game designer on Spore, Electronic Arts), Hal Barwood (game designer, Finite Arts), Tim Shafer (CEO, Double Fine Productions, Inc.), John Chowanec (producer, Crystal Dynamics), Ralph Guggenheim (CEO, Alligator Planet), and Jaron Lanier.
