Red-Tailed Hawks Nest on Fifth Floor Ledge

Apr 16,2007

Red Tailed Hawk nests on fifth floor ledge

Juleigh DeCarlo, the Director of Career services at the ETC, looked out her window one day to see branches stuck just above the top of her window. What at first looked like a wind accident or a tree growing out the building turned out to be a pair of red tailed hawks building their nest.

The Entertainment Technology Center is located on the riverbank of the Monongehela River near downtown. We are often treated to sites of river-traffic including huge coal barges that slowly make their way upstream. Wildlife sightings are also not unusual- we also have a flock of Canadian Geese who have made themselves comfortable on the front lawn, but to be this close to the beauty of nature is a real treat.

The best viewing of the nest is on the roof looking over. Being careful not to disturb the family, only one faculty member, Charles Palmer, who also serves as our resident photographer, ventures out to look for all of us through his lens. According to internet research, we are looking forward to the eggs hatching sometime this week.

We will keep you posted!
