ETC-Australia Moves into Semester 2, 2007

Jul 23,2007

A new semester has commenced "down under" as ETC-Australia works with nine continuing first year students; eight in Adelaide, one in Silicon Valley. In addition, there are three second-years registered through ETC-Australia, engaged in industry co-ops in Australia and New Zealand.

With Fundamentals and other core subjects completed, the students are set to launch into two projects:

The first, Synchronicity, is a creative game development project, that aims to create a PC game that exploits the phenomena of synchronicity…where the player's actions happen in time with the soundtrack to the game, which in turn reacts in musical time with the player's actions. The goal of the Synchronicity Project is to produce a beta-version submission for the Independent Games Festival halfway through the semester, then go on to complete the game by the semester's end.

The second, Velocity, is a collaborative venture with Exhibition Services, a South Australian company. They in turn are in partnership with the National Sports Museum (based in the capital city of Australia, Canberra).

This week a number of faculty and students attended the Adelaide Cinémathèque launch. The venue was the Mercury Cinema, run by the Media Resource Centre and specializing in screen culture and the support of emerging SA film, video and digital media artists. The launch celebrated Terry Gilliam's "Tideland" an offbeat noir film that received very mixed reviews.

Also out in the field, ETC students and faculty have just returned from meeting key players in the video game industry - Halfbrick Studios, Moket, THQ, Pandemic Studios, Aeroplane Heaven, Creative Assembly -during their East Coast Trip (Brisbane). The group enjoyed the bustle of this growing city, and also took the opportunity to follow the coastline down to Byron Bay, a township renowned for its creative, environmentally tuned-in lifestyle and gorgeous surrounds... yet another example of the many gems to be discovered here in the Land Down Under.
