Free Software

Students everywhere want to build interactive, 3D virtual worlds, but most tools for doing so are too complex, and take too long to learn. As a public service, we distribute two open-source authoring tools, and we suspect that one of them is right for you, no matter who you are!

Alice
If you have no programming experience, you will want to use Alice, which provides a drag-and-drop editor and a friendly environment for non-programmers. Alice is in use at many schools, and there is a textbook. Alice was used to create the virtual reality "Super Mario Brothers World," as seen on the G4 Network's "Attack of the Show."

Panda3d

If you have programming experience you will want to use Panda3D, a professional 3D engine developed by Disney for use in their own games. It was released as free software in 2002. Panda3D is unusual in that it emphasizes rapid development and a short learning curve. Built-in python scripting helps support this rapid development style.
