About > Australia's Environment
The ETC has created a state of the art facility in Adelaide – a facility that equals (and occasionally surpasses) our Pittsburgh campus (rated the ‘Most Wired’ in the United States) in terms of resources and equipment. Furthermore the ETC Adelaide site is located in the centre of the city in close proximity to the arts precinct, the State’s major entertainment venues and the central business district.
The following information summarises a few of the services you can expect when you enrol in the MET and reside in South Australia.
1. Welfare and guidance services
Carnegie Mellon in Adelaide provides academic and career advising services as well as referrals to other welfare and guidance agencies. You are welcome to consult with the Program Coordinator regarding any of these services.
2. ETC facilities and equipment
ETC Australia will be housed [pending final agreement] at 83 Currie Street: an ideal location for an entertainment technology centre. Surrounded by games venues, cinemas, galleries, computer agencies, restaurants and other education and training organisations, you will have easy access to the ‘real world’ of entertainment facilities and products.
The ETC will contain:
- offices for academic and administrative staff;
- a computer cluster providing specialized hardware, software and databases for specific course units, accommodating up to 25 students per group;
- a secure room for IT equipment including servers and networking devices;
- rooms for project work which will accommodate 3-8 students and contain worktables, whiteboards, power outlets for computers, etc.
- a student lounge with modest kitchen facilities.
Upon enrolment with us you will be provided with a desktop computer for your exclusive use during your studies. Should you wish to supplement this with your own wireless-capable notebook, it will be supported by:
- a high-speed WAN connection;
- high-speed wireless access throughout the facility;
- printers in appropriate public areas;
- data projectors in each space, supplemented by portable video sources of various types for special purposes;
- local web and file servers.
- access to Carnegie Mellon administrative and academic IT services: e.g. enrolment, library, portal, student information, finances, etc.
3. The local environment
Carnegie Mellon is located in South Australia’s capital city. Home to 73% of the state’s population (1,119,920 as of June 2003), Adelaide offers its residents a vibrant, urban setting that is green and easy to navigate.
Adelaide enjoys a mild, Mediterranean climate with four distinct seasons. Temperatures range from an average of 15 degrees Celsius in July to 32 degrees Celsius during the peak of summer (February). Furthermore Adelaide boasts a significant, well-maintained park system with dedicated bike tracks and footpaths linking all sectors of city.
For those more inclined to less strenuous forms of travel, Adelaide possesses an extensive public transportation system with buses, trams and taxis providing access to all parts of the city, quickly and inexpensively.
Known for many years as the Festival State, Adelaide lives up to this reputation by hosting approximately 500 festivals per annum – the largest and undoubtedly most popular being the Festival of Ideas and the Adelaide Festival of Arts (one of the three greatest arts festivals in the world).
Cultural opportunities abound with a highly regarded and extremely diverse creative arts sector. For the more athletic, sports and recreational activities occur all year round.
Adelaide’s quality of life has been ranked among the top 30 cities in the world, yet the city is not expensive. In fact, the cost of living in Adelaide is lower than any other mainland Australian capital.
