How to share files if you don't have a Windows Domain account (SCS account)

If you don’t login through your SCS account, or if you don’t have an SCS account (i.e. first years), here’s how to share files.

1) Right-click on My Computer, and choose Manage.

2) Go to the Local Users and Groups category, and open the Users folder.

3) From the Action menu, choose New User

4) Create a new username of your choice. If you only want to share files with a specific person, you could make a user name just for that person. The name does not matter, as long as you tell the person. For example, if you wanted to share files with me, you could create a new user called steve, or saudia, etc. If you want to create a general share, you could name it something like etcstudent, or friends, or springprojectgroup.

5) Type a password for the username, and then uncheck User Must Change Password at Next Login, and check User Cannot change Password, and check Password Never Expires. Click Create, and then click Close.

6) Once you've created an account, you need to share some folders. Open any folder, and go to the Tools menu and choose Folder Options. Go to the View tab and scroll to the bottom. Uncheck Use Simple File Sharing. Unfortunately simple file sharing doesn’t have enough control to prevent worms and viruses from propagating to the shares it creates.

7) Now right click on the folder you want to share and choose Sharing and Security. Choose the Share this Folder radio button, and then click on Permissions.

8) Under Permissions click on Everyone and then click Remove. If you don’t do this the whole world will be able to write to your share.

9) Click Add. In the box type the name of the username you just created and click okay. In the Permissions window you can choose what level access the user has (whether you want them to be able to read only, or be able to write to the folder as well).

10) For instructions on how to access the files you just shared see Mapping Network Drives.
