Week 4: Narrowing our Focus

At the start of the week, our advisers spoke with us about trimming our design down and picking a direction. We reviewed our emotional spaces brainstormed last week and picked three to focus on.

  1. Isolation / Loneliness
  2. Anxiety
  3. Bittersweetness

The team divided the three emotions among ourselves and set out to find potential directions we could take each one. After regrouping and review some of the individual brainstorming, we made a 3×3 grid of the emotional spaces and the problem spaces:

In each section, we tried to pitch some potential ideas for designs for the project. Some of these were more fruitful than others. For instance, while “Isolation / Loneliness” matched very well with the idea of “Group vs. Individual”, the team could not develop any ideas around “Bittersweetness” and “Group vs. Individual”.

From here, we took these ideas and brainstormed some experience ideas. We picked two ideas to present to the faculty next week. One idea was structured around the exploration of bittersweet nostalgia through a three-act structure which used physical contact to craft cathartic moments. The other idea uses a sequence of navigation lights to guide a player through the feeling of loneliness.

Next week are our quarters presentations to the faculty. We’re looking forward to getting feedback on which of our ideas are most feasible.
