Week 5 – Newsletter

This is an important week for us, because Wednesday, Feb 10th is Carnegie Mellon University, Entertainment Technology Center’s Quarter Walk around. Usually in Pittsburgh Campus, all the student projects will be reviewed by faculty. But here in Silicon Valley campus, we have around 30 guests from EA, Autodesk and our faculty playtesting our projects. So this is the first time we are showing our prototypes to the public.

To prepare for Quarter, we are working very hard to make sure the experience is smooth and understandable. One of the biggest problem we are facing for iPhone is the screen rotation issue. Because we want player to play in landscape mode, but to navigate the characters, players need to tilt their phone. In this case, screen rotation is a big issue. We temporally solve the problem by rotating the portrait view 90 degree to landscape view and lock the screen, so that player can play with two hands in a landscape mode. In the future, we will figure out a better way to solve this issue.

Here is a video of our game in the quarter walk around section:

We gain a lot of feedback about how to polish our game and how to make the experience more intuitive. Next step, before polishing and developing iteratively, we need to slow down and go back to the core mechanism, focusing on the fun things and adapt the confusing part.
On Friday, Feb 12th,  John Bell visited all the ETC projects in Silicon Valley campus. We were very happy to show our game and get his positive feedback.
