INTRODUCTION

Informedia is a set of research initiatives (Speech recognition, Computer vision, Natural language processing) with the goal of better understanding digital video, and passing this knowledge on to computers for various uses in archiving, viewing, and editing.

As a group of students in the Entertainment Technology Center, we were asked to consider what entertainment uses may lie in the Informedia System.

We posed the problem of home video - an unedited mess that is, often, not particularly interesting unless edited with care and skill. But what if a computer could take a large chunk of unedited video and turn it into something interesting?

Considering the progress being made with image and video processing, this might not be too far off. By using the visual elements of particular film genres, we are prototyping a system to take large pieces of video and make them into short and engaging pieces with a stylistic edge.
