Michael Hill

Michael’s experiences, education, and work history can best be described as eclectic in nature. His love for computer technology, art, cultures, and science was apparent at an early age. From the time he could manage holding a pencil or a piece of clay, he was encouraged by his parents to draw and create. By the age of two, he was “playing” simple games on a Leading Edge model D computer and at the age of 5, he asked his parents for a subscription to National Geographic Magazine as a Christmas gift Inspired by the magazine 3-2-1 Contact, Michael began exploring computer languages such as Visual Basic and Q Basic at the age of eight.

In high school, Michael took classes in technology and began formal training in learning to assemble and program computers. An opportunity to attend a computer animation camp at North Carolina State University opened new doors for Michael by giving him a contact and mentor who would lead and guide him through a high school senior project which focused on 3D animation using Maya.

After high school, Michael chose to attend the University of North Carolina in Asheville, which offered a degree in Multimedia Arts and Sciences (MMAS). Feeling the need for more formalized art instruction, Michael decided to leave UNC Asheville for a year to attend the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. There, he was put through a “boot camp” that involved a rigorous regimen of drawing, painting, sculpting and writing. His education there opened his eyes to a world of small details, an understanding of spatial forms on a more intimate level, and knowledge about color theory that has forever changed the way he sees the world around him.

Upon his return to UNC Asheville to finish his BA in Multimedia Arts and Sciences with a minor in computer science, Michael’s interest in interface design and human-computer interaction was rekindled when he was required to read a book entitled The New Humanists, which was filled with essays from influential people in the fields of computing and thought. The philosophies shared in the book helped drive home his desire to merge art, computer science, and the interaction of people and machines. After graduating, Michael was encouraged by two of his professors to apply to Carnegie Mellon University to pursue a Master degree that would include art, technology, and science. Michael’s dream was realized and he now attends CMU and is pursuing a master’s degree in Entertainment Technology.

Hanika Karkhanis

“ Yo Joe! He’ll fight for freedom where ever there is trouble GI Joes is there….” Speaking of cartoons and quoting them may seem a little frivolous but Hanika’s interest in Digital Art is certainly a serious one. What started out as a pleasurable past time and more of a hobby has now become a consuming passion and she now recognizes that the strong desire she has to pursue this subject is the one way to thoroughly enjoy making a living. Ever since childhood, cartoons have ruled Hanika’s life. Coming from a family which was both technically skillful and artistic at the same time, she was always encouraged to develop her passion for drawing and painting since young age. In school, she always got straight A’s in drawing class and was equally a good student in other academics as well. In order to nurture this passion for the art, she appeared for state level drawing exams and passed with flying colors.Hanika was introduced to computers at the young age of eight and ever since then was crazy about playing all kinds of computer games. Her two favorite pass times were drawing and playing computer games. But at that age, she was too young to realize that both these passions could actually be combined together , that she could draw and design for the computer games she loved so much. Choosing her under graduation major in Computer engineering was mainly influenced by this desire to learn more about computers and then branch into designing. The four years of undergrad exposed Hanika to a lot of creative activities, where she actively participated and excelled. Taking part in all kinds of events and organizing them came naturally to her and she enjoyed working in groups.Completing her under graduation with flying colors, she decided to go into teaching because she enjoyed mentoring students. At the same time, she realize that her major in computer engineering was not enough for her to continue on her goal towards getting back to designing. So while teaching, she took up a diploma in multimedia specialist and completed it. During this time, she realized, she could get back to her beloved cartoons and computer games and so she decided to apply to this unique masters in entertainment technology program which was a perfect blend of computer science and art , best suited for her background. Hanika is now looking to explore the world of game designing and art along with applying her under graduate programming skills.
