Week 12/13: Onboarding Playtests, Build Lock, and Thanksgiving Beta release

Given the Thanksgiving holiday, blog posts for Week 12 and 13 have been combined. The tone of the project overall has shifted toward polishing and final packaging. Conversations with our Client Ana have likewise shifted from production towards the future of the tool and the grant as a whole.

In Ana’s mind, there remain 5 deliverables to address before the end of the project

  • Documentation
  • Onboarding video (final draft)
  • Launch website and short-term maintenance
  • Accessibility
  • Final playtest

Playtesting: The onboarding video and website were playtested with all 5 institutions. Feedback was gathered and used to inform the next iteration of the onboarding script. Overall, the video was serviceable for staff with greater tech savviness. Playtesters also uncovered a few graphical bugs with presentation mode and permissions that were documented for programming. Overall, all staff were enthusiastic to begin using the tool in earnest with their coworkers. These playtests also illustrated the importance of Zoom in the final product. Playtesters expressed far greater fear and ignorance with Zoom than with our tool.

Programming: With that in mind, programming concluded work on the updated presentation mode recommended by the playtest with Amanda and Kelsie of the Frick from Week 10. Additionally, the team tackled bugs in the UI, database, and plugins that were discovered in the playtests with museum staff. Programming met with Mike Christel to outline and develop the technical documentation (documentation intended for future developers for continued development or for bug fixing). Finally, the team was advised by Mosswood Creative to launch and debug the website’s formal Launch: things change when a website launches, it would be prudent to ensure that nothing unexpected happens when the website launches in earnest.

A branded beta branch of each website was also provided to each client on Friday for testing and demos over the Thanksgiving break.

Looking to Week 14, the team also prepared a blogpost for Soft opening with ETC Faculty.

Goals for Week 14 are as follows:

  • Soft Opening with ETC Faculty
  • Meet with Clients to launch the website (or decide to delay the launch)
  • Develop documentation and onboarding video further
  • Fix any bugs uncovered from the Thanksgiving Beta websites
