Research on experiences with social purpose

After we researched the existing projects, we knew what other people are doing and where AR technology is. Then we found there were few projects that have social interactions in their experience. So we asked ourselves that were there some projects focused on social purpose? Yes, some of us have tried social VR games like Recroom, Facebook Horizon and all the party games were working on social purposes. So we started research on these experiences.

Focus on exploring social interaction

We talked with our faculty, they agree with our research. They think all the directions we have right now is good to go. But what they want out of our project is different possibilities in social AR and engaging and funny interaction in social ar. What they said gave us a clear direction. Also, during the faculty meeting in week3, we settle up our metrics.

Then based on our metrics, we focused on brainstorming social interactions. We get inspiration from our daily lives. We asked ourselves what kind of social interactions we have in daily lives? We thought about what we usually do in different social scenarios. For example, we clap hands together and high five together to cheer up. We hang out and have food together. We want to chat more when we have some topics. We work together to finish some tasks. We play party games and so on. We conclude all the interaction as our “database”. Later we can build from it. We concluded all the interactions we found into seven parts.

1.High-five / Clapping / Hold hands

2. Dragging / pull

3. Lift object together

4. Throw & catch

5. Pass objects to another

6. Sculpt / Knead / Stretch

7. Play instrument (touch/tap to control object)

This week, our programmers had started to test out all the features within our deceives. And they have built generating cubes and 3D drawing features. Since we are not familiar with our devices now. We decided to start with simple and important features. Then we decided to start with high-five and clapping.

During our research, we also agreed that communication is another key interaction in daily life. Voice chatting feature is the most important feature in our project especially the experience was designed for players who are not in the same physical spaces. In this case, communication is a way for players to know what they are doing. Due to the networking problems, we are facing. We will build the voice chat feature after Quarter.
