Week 9

Hello everyone, welcome to our week 9 blog. This week we have our halves presentation on Monday, and get feedback from faculties and students.

We also changed the mechanics a little. Now as you can see from the video, there is various pieces for players to choose at the beginning, so students might get a better view to understand how fractions come from a whole piece. Of course if you do not like it
we can definitely change it.
In summary, now what we have is a candyland theme with new selecting functions.
The link below is the video presentation of our 1/2s presentation.(we are the second team.)
It was a success that we introduced our project to the audience. They all liked the game and SMALLab. However, some ETC faculties have some opinions, which are summed up as following.

1. Some instructors mentioned that we are supposed to do more research on teaching methods about fractions and SMALLab so that it can theoretically support our product better. How do you think of it or do you have any advice or more materials? (We did do some research, but they want something more academic)
2. Maybe conducting playtest at different schools is a good idea.
3. How to measure the effect of our product? Perhaps by comparing students’ grades or using some questionnaires? Do the teachers have any suggestion?
4. The candy world theme was rejected once. ETC projects that candy-based theming is not acceptable (Sharon Carver of Carnegie Mellon’s Children’s School rejected candy theming for a Illuminate ETC project stacking objects. Is it acceptable for your schools?
5. Embodied learning. I think games in SMALLabs are all related to embodied learning because of the SMALLab device. But the faculty said we need to emphasize it.
Feedback from faculty is important to us, but we really care about your opinions as clients. So we are looking forward to hearing from you.
Most people like what we have done, and we will keep iterating it.
