To celebrate the end of the semester, everyone came over for dinner last night. It was too cold to hang out outside (like we did last semester).

Congratulations to our Fall 2008 class! Yesterday were final presentations, and the teams presented to about 40 guests in the audience, including our own Don Marinelli. Great jobs, all the way around.

Blizzard Entertainment

blizzard-logoShortly after the final presentations on Wednesday, the students of ETC-SV gathered for a presentation by Sumer Ortiz, university relations manager at Blizzard Entertainment.

During the presentation students were given valuable information concerning what Blizzard looks for when hiring new employees. The discussion addressed the most common positions sought after by perspective employees: programming, design, and art.

Programming:

  • know your C++
  • submit small code samples
  • samples should relate to desired programming position (AI, Graphics, Networking, etc.)
  • make quick demo of games you have made

Design:

  • make a website to showcase portfolio
  • portfolio should contain video walkthroughs of different levels and mods
  • show design docs you have written
  • summarize each project you showcase

Art:

  • adopt Blizzard art style (bad-ass poses, superhero proportions, vibrant colors)
  • put together portfolio of art showing that style

In addition, ETC-SV students were dazzled by video trailers of many of Blizzard’s up and coming products, as well as receiving some cool Blizzard SWAG. During the Q&A section of the presentation, Sumer was very forthcoming with information and suggestions on what Blizzard hiring managers are looking for in new talent.

The presentation was the final elective course for the students this semester, and all of the students were very thankful to Sumer and Blizzard for taking the time to speak with them. Overall, the final elective course proved to be an informative and enjoyable conclusion to an excellent semester of learning.

During his visit to the West Coast, CMU President Jared Cohon dropped by EA and spent some time with our teams.

First stop was Team Hatch, where he protected the north pole from aquian invaders.

Then, on to a tour of the Tea & Sugar Train, where he got an earful about the life of a butcher straight from the source.

More importantly, we all appreciated his interest in the students themselves. He met them all individually and learned about their roles on the projects and their backgrounds before coming to the ETC.

And check out the the T&S Train team – all wearing their CMU colors. Smart in many dimensions.

The Eye of Sauron in action

Or its marketing name, Generic Evil Sorcerer King Burning Eyeball.

It’s terrifying, and it really works! No mocking-up or fakery in this video, it’s all done with camera vision. Movie magic (read: camera angles) prevents you from seeing the camera we used to watch the user, but it’s all for real! Why not buy an Eye of Sauron to top your Christmas tree this year?

I can think of several reasons why not! Principally: weight!
