Soft Opening Fall ’11

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 posted by yunkyukim

We had our Soft Opening on Wednesday, December 30th. It was a little cool but still sunny day. At 10:30 AM we began to set up for Soft Opening inside Building No.250, in front of the Starbucks. The three ETC teams at the SV campus took part in this Soft Opening. The first team, Five Sided Square, made a board game using SIFTEO cubes. The game’s name is “Miami Heist,” and the goal of this game is to become rich or build many buildings. The second team, Crescendo, made a playable music game like Guitar Hero that uses orchestra instruments like a clarinet, keyboard, timpani, violin, and conductor’s baton. The name of this game is Do-re-mi Pets.  The third team is anteater: they made a puzzle game using Unity that has seventeen levels.

At 11:30 AM the teams ate very delicious pizzas for lunch. Many EA employees came to our Soft Opening using their lunch time. Because the teams set up near a cafeteria,  it was easy for people to walk by our projects. People had a fun time interacting with the project displays since all of the projects are based on making playable games. This got people very interested in the projects and they had a good time playing with them.

At 1:50 PM a group of students from a local high school came by to look at the projects. All of the teams received good feedback from the EA employees and students. People liked Five Sided Square’s board game even though it took a little time to understand the rules of the game. People also really enjoyed playing with the SIFTEO cubes for the game. The Crescendo team was also well received. People had a fun time playing their music game and said they would visit their website. AntEAter  was also pretty popular. Many people spent time figuring out their puzzles and got addicted to trying to beat all of the puzzles. People even found many different ways to solve the puzzles. We are thankful to our faculty and the EA staff who helped us setup our Soft Opening and made it run so smoothly.

Soft Opening Spring ’11

soft o·pen·ing noun /sɔft, sɒft ˈoʊpənɪŋ/ not hard or stiff act or instance of making or becoming open.

But in the ETC culture, soft opening is a gathering of enthusiastic students and amazing play-testers joining each other in celebration of Free Food™. We eat, play, talk and share ideas about games, our games, their games, and everything else that is not games. That is exactly what happened just this past week, on Friday, April 22.

As you’re aware, we have four amazing teams hosted here in ETC-SV this semester (and though god has made them all equal, one team is more equal than the rest!) Each team had a booth set up in the main atrium here at Electronic Arts, and that’s where they lured the foot traffic to test whatever they had made and give the team otherworldly feedback. For some this meant handing phones and tablets, while others would ask people to sit at PCs or stand in front of a giant TV with a security camera pointed at their nose. However, this whole day wasn’t completely void of interesting encounters.

Paulwei’s gang (or team Puppetineering; now which do you prefer?!) made contact with a group of tiny, cute and cuddly kids, which seemed to enjoy dancing along Super Quasi to a Michael Jackson hit. The most awesome team of all time, Blue Dot, also made an interesting attempt at collecting play-testers’ business cards by offering them “a batch of cupcakes;” a technique that led to an unprecedented increase in both quantity and quality of the feedback they received. As for Empyrean 2D and Ethereal, one is making an awesome medieval combat game with cool graphics and breathtaking tech behind the scenes, and the other is Ethereal.

A complete success, as always; though no one knows what the future might bring. There might come a time when soft opening at ETC-SV is still a success, but students write up astonishingly unprofessional blog posts about it. Well, we’re good for now at least :)

Soft Opening Fall ’10

It was an awakening to the first gloomy day of the week. You didn’t see the sun the entire morning of the 19th of November. A day grey on the outside, but in contrast, bustling at the EA Redwood Shores Atrium the entire afternoon. It was the soft opening for us, the 3 ETC teams at the SV campus.

Fall 2010 Soft Open

Project teams set up in the EA Atrium

We set up our booths at ten in the morning and waited for a consortium of all the expertise from EA to check out our projects. The session started a little slow but from lunch time on the crowd picked up. All three teams dressed with the ETC brand shirts got a large number of visitors prying with interest in their projects.

The three projects covered different areas of gaming. From cross cultural gaming (CoCo&Co) to a Sims style game (Arca) to games for 3D displays (Opsis2), the projects had a variety that sparked an array of interest from the visitors.

The teams received valuable feedback from the crowd which did comprise of a few of the higher ups from EA, including Rich Hilleman, EA’s CCO. We did have a group of students from a local Design school visit us as well.

On the whole the day had a casual feel with all the teams benefitting from the input given to them from the visitors. We are grateful to our faculty and the members of the EA staff who helped us set up and arrange everything smoothly.

Soft Opening Fall ’09

“Soft Open” happens two weeks before each semester ends. It is an opportunity for the projects to show their work to a broader audience, do some playtesting and get feedback. In Pittsburgh this happens similar to an Open House, where project spaces are open for visitors. Here in Silicon Valley we have to work a little differently. Inside of Electronic Arts we need to be sensitive to having people parade through employee’s workspaces, so EA generously lets us set up in the Atrium – a large lobby area next to one of the cafeterias and the internal Starbucks. The teams set up their projects there from about 11am to 1pm, nabbing the lunchtime traffic to show off their work.
