To obtain an internship applying my skill in architecture and interactive
design to innovative new entertainment content |
Gutenberg’s
invention of the printing press transformed people’s living
by making available vast stores of knowledge. In the present day,
the rapid development of computers and the internet is bringing about
a fundamental change in the structure society, culture, and knowledge
itself.
As a child growing up in this era, my passion for
architecture, music, moving pictures and online game constantly brought
me into contact with cutting edge media technology. During my architectural
studies in Tunghai university, I became fascinated by new possibilities
brought by CAAD (Computer aided architectural design), and devoted
considerable efforts to exploring the complex relationship between
architecture and new design medium.
After graduating from university, I entered the
ROC Naval architecture department in order to fulfill my two years
military service. Upon receiving military discharge, I found an editorial
position at Taiwan Architecture magazine, where I was devoted to bring
in the digital design process to architectural practice. I also have
worked in an architecture studio, SURV, and an exhibition design company,
Uniplan, using digital media in real practice. I dream of integrating
new digital design techniques and architecture into a unified system.
Entering the ETC, I hope to further develop the
coherent territories of digital medium and the virtual world. |

Originally
from Louisiana, Richard recently graduated from Washington University
in St. Louis with a degree in Computer Science and a minor in Robotics.
He is specifically interested in artificial intelligence, mobile robotics,
and computer graphics. Although he's always loved art, his undergraduate
engineering studies left him with little time for such pursuits. Richard
sees the ETC as the perfect opportunity to learn more about graphics
and design and their integration with technology. He's looking forward
to exploring the educational applications of video games and new "high-tech"
toys. In his spare time (which is often non-existent), Richard enjoys
movies, drawing, skiing, video games, and Legos.

Ever
since he played his first adventure game, The Secret of Monkey Island,
Ted has been intrigued with the ability for computers to act as a
medium for artistic expression and creative storytelling. At the age
of 13, Ted picked up his first programming book and taught himself
how to program. Later, he created several shareware screensavers and
was amazed when people were actually willing to pay money for them!
Ted began to realize that programming itself was an artform: the computer
was an infinite block of stone, and the code was the chisel. Having
interned at Intel, Microsoft, and Evans & Sutherland, Ted is still
looking for his "dream job." He has always wanted to create
programs that people enjoy using. Besides programming, Ted's other
interests include origami, anime, ping pong, snowboarding, traveling,
and the occasional extreme sport. Ted graduated from Duke University
with a B.S. in Computer Science and a certificate in Neuroscience. |

After
graduating from the University of Rochester in 1999, Ben Smith lived
in Manhattan making a living as a Digital Designer for two years.
Ben enjoyed the position which so freely let him utilize his artistic
ability, but he also felt that there was more in life to explore.
His wise older brother recognized this and came
up with a plan; "Ben, we should travel the world." The two
brothers decided to leave New York City with the little money they
had saved, and set out for South East Asia in search of adventure.
Over the next year, the two explored the ancient
ruins of Cambodia, sailed the Mekong River through Laos, fly-fished
the crystal clear streams of New Zealand, surfed the beaches of Vietnam,
and hiked to Base Camp of Mt Everest.
Through this time Ben realized the firm significance
of utilizing his artistic roots into the future. He found out his
younger brother Tom was applying to the Entertainment Technology Center
at Carnegie Mellon. The idea of artists and technologists working
together towards a common creative objective greatly interested Ben.
He decided to also apply.
Now teamed up with yet another brother, Ben
and Tom live and work together in Pittsburgh where they find themselves
in the same grade for the first time? and continue to receive weekly
phone calls packed with good advice from their wise older brother,
who now attends Business school in Australia.

Auction House in Rockefeller Center, New York where he teamed up with
their Creative Department to assist designing for publications such
as The New York Times and Christie's Magazine. Tom's ability to adjust
quickly to new situations and different people is the result of his
travel to such areas as Ecuador, Europe, South Africa and South East
Asia. He also studied in Russia and more recently at Auckland University
of Technology in New Zealand. Recent projects include the production
of short films and trailers, exhibiting work in art shows, writing
and illustrating short books, and sculpting wildlife. Tom especially
enjoys creating visual storyboards and making places or objects come
