Newsletter Week 2

This week we made a really important progress. We narrowed down the goal of our projects, did a lot of research about different eye problems and also came up with really good game mechanism and narratives.

PROGRESS

Goals

After the discussion with our client and advisors, we reached an agreement that all 3 parts of the intended project will be difficult for us to do within one semester. So we will concentrate on reproducing what patients can see. Besides, we decide to cut the eye tracking part from the project. The technology of tracking eye movement within Oculus Rift is far from mature, so it would a semester-long project to achieve this single feature.

Equipment

  • Oculus Rift dk2

After some researches and discussions, we are going to use Oculus Rift dk2-the new Oculus Rift for this project. This one has better features than the old one, especially for creating virtual reality. It is good at 3d vision and depth. Besides, it is easier for both of us and our client to get it since the old one is out of production. We already got an Oculus Rift dk2 and tested it.

  • The prism set

The client suggested us to try a set of prisms with which we could experience the patient’s view. We are going to buy this equipment as soon as possible.

Eye diseases

With the help of the client, we did research of different eye diseases, such as diplopia, color blind, amblyopia, strabismus, tunnel vision, etc.

Rough Ideas and Game mechanisms

We got a guideline for our game. First, we will include multi-symptoms in the game experience. Second, we would integrate a variety of mini-game into the game. Third, we will let player choose what kind of disease they’d like to experience. We also pitched our ideas for mini-games, such as driving a car, picking up objects, defusing the bomb, etc.

Long-term plan

First draft plan of the project for the whole semester has been made. The plan would be modified after the team meeting and advisor meeting on next Monday.

PROSPECT

Next week we will have more concrete ideas to discuss with our advisors and client. Then we will narrow the ideas down to three and start making prototypes for these ideas. Artists would continue working on logo, poster and half sheet.
