Assuming Direct Control

Hey everyone this is Prateek. I’m a programmer here at Dark Clutches and I’ll be doing a blog post every couple of weeks about some of the stuff I’m working on. I also maintain this website so if you have any feedback or suggestions leave a comment or shoot us an email at darkclutches@gmail.com.

Recently, I had been working on putting together control schemes for the game. Especially playing around with one-handed control schemes and other schemes with virtual buttons.

Below are a few examples of schemes that were brainstormed:

Controls1 Controls2 Controls3 Controls4 Controls5 Controls6

Without going into too much detail, we’ve decided to move forward with none of those control schemes. Whoops.

We plan on continuing with a layout of Virtual Buttons combined with some gesture movement during development while exploring more options for one-handed control (something we would really like to use). Through playtesting we have found that virtual buttons actually seem to work fairly well for our particular game. Though we are aware of the stigma surrounding the use of virtual buttons, they seem to be a completely satisfactory control scheme for us at the moment. 100% gesture based gameplay is an ideal that we have heard time and again and we will be exploring it in the weeks to come.
