Week 2 – Making Materials

What We Did

This week was spent on mocking up a few rough drafts of recruitment material. We spent our time working on the ChairJam website, flyer, and several logo ideas.  The website draft was made on Wix because of its simplicity and immediate availability – good for making something quick. They flyers were made from scratch by our artists. At the end of the week we had a client meeting to go over our work and get some actionable feedback. The feedback was a mixture of UX issues and, of course, learning more about what is and is not offensive. For example, we had a placeholder background image that was a blueprint of a wheelchair. Problem was, it was a very traditional/clinical wheelchair with the handles on the back. It reinforced dependence. Naturally, we are looking for a new background. Next week we will focus on implementing the feedback to hopefully get everything up to par.

Deliverables & General Scheduling

Our biggest deliverables this early in the semester are going to be our aforementioned recruitment materials, ie the website and flyer. It’s important to note that we only have six weeks left until the event. That being true, we need to have these ready for the public eye within the next week or so. We hope to begin reaching out to possible interested parties in the latter half of the week 3 or beginning of week 4 so that we can have a healthy number of attendees confirmed in time for the event. Once the outreach is underway, we can switch over to a logistical prep phase. After ChairJam itself has passed, we can reevaluate our direction. It will heavily depend on the results produced at ChairJam. At the very least, we will want to document ChairJam for publicity and iteration.

In an effort to better understand our roles and responsibilities, we made a RACI (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed) chart. The chart is and will be subject to change as we learn more, but it helped us get started on understanding our specific positions.

Lifelong Learning

This is a rather unique project in that we get to work with a community that we have previously had little to no contact with. Learning how to navigate such an environment on top of the work that goes into putting on an event that everybody can enjoy is no small feat. It will be a continual learning process, but should give us insights that we can take forward to future endeavors.
