Meeting with the Client!

Good news from the MAKESHOP: they have ordered the laser cutter. We cannot wait to play with that.

We talked about our prototypes this week. We presented the paper prototype of Tracing Shapes and high level idea of Bendy Shapes. When Atulit was presenting the idea, we discovered that the complexity and difficulty of that idea. We will be revising that next week. Christian also suggested to keep our prototypes ultra low level, with paper and scissors. He also mentioned the difficulty of 2D -> 3D transition; it is not easy to describe this and it is not intuitive.

We talked about the inspiring papers, videos of the past laser cutter projects. We will be sharing them with our client so that they can benefit from them while telling the kids about the laser cutter.

We talked about whether we should have auto correction in our future product which brings the “That’s not what I drew!” vs. “Yes I tried to draw this but I couldn’t.”

20130213_132841While we went there, we tried to do our first play testing. However, the kids in the museum on Wednesday were too young for our testing. We will be going on Sunday and Monday for testing.

Quarters Presentation!

We had our 1/4 presentation on Friday. It went really good, we got really good feedback from the faculty. Here is a summary of the responses/comments:

  • How long MAKESHOP would like the experience last? The design process should be limited or not?
  • We got 5 seconds to impress/attract kids with our product.
  • Kids can draw stick-men or dogs with noodle legs, they may try to paint the closed areas and the laser cutting will result with ashes. -> there should be a mechanism for the MAKESHOP artist to approve the design before it’s cut.
  • Ask open ended questions while play testing, the questions should be no answer leading or confirming.
  • Instead of showing the digital work that are previously done, there can be a pre-practical area where kids can see what has been designed and cut physically.
  • What sort of things can be done by only a laser cutter? (When we mentioned speed and accuracy -> what is the role of accuracy and speed in design process)
  • What is kids design their medals?
  • Almost all of the faculty members told us their kids/ kids in general would like to print out their names.
  • Characters, animals can be cut
  • Showing positive-negative pieces of a cut is impressive.

Next Week!

  • We will finish our 2 prototypes and pass to our production phase!
