Week 4 – Basic Design and Start of Prototype

For week 4, the week before Quarters, after getting the basic idea of the model of equipment we’re going to make the tutorial for, we did more research on that equipment and did brainstorming for possible game design ideas for different devices.

For devices, as Yiheng mentioned last week, we considered different technologies, such as Augmented Reality, using Hololens; Virtual Reality, using HTC vive, Google cardboard, or Oculus; and traditional computer stuffs like web-applications.

As one of our objectives is to make the thing, or to say the training game easy to access at anytime any where, we decided to give up the AR and VR first as the Hololens requires the actual installation of the equipment, and HTC vive and Oculus also need it’s own installation and headset, and Google cardboard seems not having enough control.

So we went quite deep into the detailed design of the possible web application or mobile application. As the equipment we’re going to “work” with is quite big (taller than a person), so we need to consider the mechanism we’ll show the users to let them get the feeling of the scale of the equipment. Thus it became quite different from the existing procedural games and tutorial applications.

We started working on our demo build in unity to prepare for the quarters as well as the trip next week to show the client and faculties what we have designed and what we decided to do. We split the functions and each of our programmers got something to work with.

On Friday’s client meeting, we talked a little bit more about the detailed schedule of our producer and designer’s trip to Boston, and the schedule of our whole group’s remote present of the meetings during their visit. Also, the client provided some of the possible situations and his idea of possible technology used and basic design ideas.

We discussed about the ideas and if they’re doable after the client meeting, prepared for the questions for the Boston trip, and then is the weekend!

Good luck to Yiheng and Carsten on their trip!
