WEEK 15 – PREPARING FOR FINAL

Last week before Final! Time flies so fast and it’s close to the end of this semester. The week we iterated our ending based on soft’s feedback, and fixed some bugs. We are also making promotion videos and preparing for final presentation.

Production

From soft’s feedback, we have 3 major issues in the game, which are Ending dilemma not strong, monster scene not scary and missing hand after transformation. Base on these three major feedbacks. We integrated our game.

For ending, instead of just showing a text to let player think. We changed it to be open-ended. Now player need to choose what’s his intention of the Child. Is he going to do something bad or just stay alone in the forest. We think adding a obvious question and let them choose will have more impact on them. After the player chose his ending, we have different sound cues to inspire you in the end. For the ending that player will stay, we will use the scary sound to indicate player need to go on and on with this. Another ending, where the child got tricked, we will have the transformation sound to tell you that the transformation goes on. We believe using these cues will help the player think more.

About the monster scene, since wo removed the cheesy monster look at you animation, and it becomes disconnected with the story. We are working on adding the code back, and instead of letting all the monsters walk in lines. We are going to change movement to be more fluffy and close to the player. We also integrate the new version of the scary song into our engine, which also helps us to achieve a scary scene.

For hands, we adopt the ideas from some playertests last week to add a trail as the creature’s hand. Also we use the same material as the creature’ body to add the clue that the the player is actually becoming creature.

Besides, we work on packaging our game into standalone EXE. Early this week, we had troubles with tons of errors when exporting our builds. We spent a lot of time looking into the issues. It turned out that the tutorial file in the startup content of the project has some error reference. We moved it out and successfully built our package and also tried out on the new Oculus Touch Controller, Special Thanks to Carl!

We also finished the tutorial menu  and polished credit menu for the game, and it will be integrated in the final version!

Branding and Final Documentation

On Monday, we shoot the footage of the promotion video and finished the raw cut with current gameplay video. We will have it updated after we have a final version walkthrough. We also worked on the documentation and archiving the project, among this we retrospected the whole semester and thought about what went well and what needs to be improved. We discussed it and merge our ideas into the post-mortem. Hope it will be a good reference for the futuren team

Next

Next week is final, we will be finishing our deliverable, preparing for presentation and archiving all the things we learned and acquired during the semester. It has been a great semester for our team to learn, have fun and accomplish project together. Happy Finals!
