Week 13 Newsletter (04/13 – 04/17)

w13-2

Overview

Ahoy from Jelly Pirates! We had a heavily implementation focused week as we get closer to our finals. During the week we focused on putting all the pieces together, fixing the bugs as we go and mainly tweak the level and the enemy waves for a better game experience.

Progress over the Week:

The week was spent with preparation for the softs. We tested the new merged cannon mechanic over the weekend and we decided to keep it in as it proved to enhance the cooperation a lot.

We added new music for the start menu/character select, boss, and treasure collection scenes in the game as well as a slew of new sound effects to enhance the feedback and enjoyment of gameplay. We also created and integrated new art assets and animations for some of the pre-existing enemies, as well as a few new ones. We mapped out the games enemy waves to present more challenge to the players while allowing them to learn the different dynamics of gameplay, including a new opening tutorial sequence. Lastly, our designers created the boss level waves, we are still working on the boss difficulty to make it feel like an epic final battle.

The week was spent mostly making our game as seamless as possible for not only the softs but also for the playtest on Saturday. We are hoping it will give us enough feedback to make the game even better for softs.

Next Steps:

As the gameplay is finalized, we still have some bugs in between sessions. Giving players the option to start from the checkpoints, restart the game and re-select characters smoothly without any connection issues is something we are still working on. Our biggest challenge as we get to the end of the semester is to polish the game as much as possible.
