We have three approaches,

the first is two-player networking,  second is nurse only perspective, the third is the patient-only perspective. After our iteration and prototyping, we decide to continue with the third approach, which is the patient only approach.

Our first approach is two players, two perspectives.

The users will be two nurses, one plays as nurse, the other role-plays as patient.

Since we focus on different perception and understanding between nurses and patients, it is intuitive to show two perspectives directly. However, since there is an improv acting aspect here, our clients worried that it is hard to control. They want to have a more controlled design for easier deployment. Also, because of asymmetric design of two players, it is hard to make sure that all the nurses have the same experience.

In addition, a nurse might judge other nurse’s performance while playing together.

Here is our second approach in the nurse’s perspective. This is an intuitive way for nurses to apply their takeaways of our experience to their daily work.
We design to show rewarding moments to motivate nurses to devote extra attention to patients.
We want to simulate the real situation of nurses’ challenging and busy routine, and focus what is their takeaway when facing so many difficulties and dilemma in their work. However, our client already have many training from the nurse’s perspective, and they strongly want a patient perspective.

This is the approach that we decide to work on. In this perspective-taking approach, we want to help nurse understand the patient’s experience better.
We work closely with our client. Our client gives us a C.A.R.E model which specify the good nurse archetype. And they want the experience to be generic, and use words and language that people actually talk in real life.
We have two major design challenges.
The first is should we show good nurse behaviors or bad behaviors. In order to have effective training results, we decide that we focus on one side. We decide to show the good behaviors.
Our second challenge is should this experience be generic or specific? We want to be as generic as possible, however, there are some specific parts that we cannot avoid.
