Week 4

We started off this week by meeting at scrum and discussing what things needed to be finished for Quarters. This time we had more of a concrete idea for our client, which had more details in. The idea was more of a refinement of the earlier idea that we had in the previous week, which was of the hack-and-slash genre. The idea was that it would be fun to play a low-poly hack-and-slash game which has exciting moments and the idea was based around the player trying to go from one obstacle to another using viewers input. We mainly nailed down the art direction for this week and started working on a working prototype for Quarters next week.

From the programming perspective we thought of including the movement mechanics so that the faculty would have something tangible in their hands to imagine what the direction of our game will be. After some iterations we got to the point where we can move around using the Thumbstick, which is a popular way by which people move around in mobile/console based games. And also we can now see the hit box of the player, i.e. the range in which he will attack the enemy. We also got some environment art such as various buildings to put inside our game. We also have a draft of our character and enemies put inside the prototype so that people have a better understanding of the game.

We showed a prototype to our advisor this week and she thought that this had potential, which was reassuring. We also thought about how the chat interaction will be present in the game and thought about using the Twitch chat mechanism or to use a Ticker which sends chat messages across the screen. Of which one to use is still the question we want to ask our faculties at Quarters. We were all excited about having this game being sci-fi and the first thing that came to everyone’s mind was Tron and we thought that there are not many low-poly sci-fi games available in the market.

Over the next coming weeks, we will iterate more and have something substantial for the coming weeks and then try to playtest more to see if people really like the idea of playing a game while interacting with the player using some sort of chat interactions.
