Week 12 Iteration and Summary

After the playtesting in week 11, we began the iteration and redesign.

The report system is designed as follows and we made the flow on the Promethean side clearer as showed in pics.

Understanding the Task

The given task for this project is to build a language learning experience for student with dyslexia by using the two technology platforms: Chromebook and Promethean Board. The task was specifically given by our clients which is to digitalize the validated language learning tool called Elkonin Box.

Research

The research goal is largely focused on understanding our target user – students with dyslexia –  especially within their context of learning in classroom. In order to get a better sense of our users, we conducted both primary and secondary research.

    • Primary: Primary research is generally composed of two criteria: Field studies and user interview which is targeted to understand the user context and their specific needs, difficulties, etc
        • Field studies: Field studies are research activities that take place in the user’s context rather than in your office or lab. We specifically used the method called Contextual Inquiry. In January, our team visited Wheeling Country Day school to have a pure observation of the classroom activity in which they use both Elkonin Box and Promethean Board in order to understand the context.

        • User Interview: In addition to the in-depth field research, we also conducted a semi-structured interviews for the potential user interviews with specific set of questions.
            • Interviewees
                • 1 Teacher (Client)
                • 2 Students
    • Secondary: Secondary research mostly aims to increase the general understanding of dyslexia, especially the teaching methodologies in educating the students with this disorder. The research is basically composed of finding some relevant academic articles, participating a seminar for teaching dyslexic students, and comparing some other similar digital products.
        • Journals: Academic journals are largely based on understanding dyslexia or any relative solutions in language learning experience and tips for design solutions for this specific target audience.
          •
        • Seminar: As part of understanding and researching, we participated one of the seminars for teachers educating students with dyslexia.

Define

    • Target User: There are two potential stakeholders of our experience:
        • Group 1: Students with dyslexia from 2-5th graders
        • Group 2: Teachers

    • Pain Points  / needs
        • Students
            • No immediate feedback
            • Distracted by other student’s performance
            • Hard to seek for teacher’s attention
            • Love the social interaction with others / teachers
        • Teacher
            • Difficult to track each students’ performance
            • Want students to be able to perform the task individually

    • Design Goal
        • Underlying Objective: Help students feel more motivated and enjoy the experience therefore ultimately leading them to be more engaged in learning and improving their phonological awareness
        • Design Pillars
            • Micro Goal 1
              • Secure the educational value of physical Elkonin Box and expand its function with the benefit of technologies on individual Chromebook
                • Put emphasis on the process of selecting and placing the marble
                • Provide Immediate Feedback
            • Micro Goal 2
                • Reinforce the learning experience via collaborative and interactive spelling game on promethean board
