Week 4: Brainstorming and the Quarter

The 1/4 walk around ended successfully. We delivered our ideas in the 1/4 walk around and sit-down.

Our project is going to be built according to this layout. Dividing the project into two parts, it involves the Elkonin box on the chromebook and the background game on the promethean board. In order to help teacher assess students’ deeds better in this project, we will be developing the monitoring system for teacher to have a better understanding of how students did in their Elkonin box tasks. After the walk-around and sit-down, we got a lot of suggestions from our faculty including

1. Do not avoid the problem whether digitalizing Elkonin box would harms the interaction coming from physical one. After our research, we found digitization of Elkonin box is worthwhile since there is no this kind of digital application for students with Dyslexia. A group of students can take advantage of this application and the assessment for teacher in using monitoring system improves the learning experience. The digitalization is not only what we can do, but what we should do.

2. Getting to know to which we are going to keep, in order to have better education to student, we are going to put our line to Elkonin box, which is the well-grounded  methods for students with Dyslexia to learn language.

After the Quarter, we did a lot of brainstorming especially on game design. With more and more ideas popping into our minds, we began to balance the pros and cons, so that we can build a nice educational game. Following are ideas we had:

At last, we found the flipping cards will fulfill both learning benefits and game interest. Therefore, we will go with that ideas and be planning to develop digital prototype in this week. Other than that, we are also planning to conduct playtesting with working prototype in early next week.

Finally, going through the project metrics for this semester:

 Project Metrics

Within this semester, we are going to partner with Wheeling Country Day school and help them to finish one immersive technology-based solution facilitating in-class learning experience for students with dyslexia.

In the past few weeks, we did a lot of user research on the students with Dyslexia and their current education methodology. Then, we got the top 4 metrics that we need to focus on. In the rest of this semester,

The usage of Elkonin Box for students with Dyslexia is well-founded, so we are going to digitalize this method into our project.

Building the Monitoring System for teacher to help them assess how their students did in the Elkonin box test will be another part for our project.

Building a Dyslexia – friendly user interface, and one cute game setting (modelling, UI design) are objectives for artists this semester.

Overall, we will finish one collaborative and creative in-class application designed to benefit students with Dyslexia and their teachers for a transformational learning experience.
