Virtual West Coast Trip 2021

The West Coast Trip is an annual event all ETC students experience. This year, it is happening virtually. Much care and thoughts have gone into planning the 2021 trip to ensure the valuable experiences and spirit of the trip are maintained while in a virtual setting.

Thank you to all our industry partners, alumni, and friends of the ETC who helped to make the Virtual West Coast Trip 2021 a success this year. More info about the event this year can be found on ETC social media. See you in 2022!

Building Connections and Learning about Roles

During these four days, students will participate in a total of six virtual site visits with relevant employers. These site visits provide a glimpse into the company culture, their work, what they look for when hiring, and most importantly, a chance for the students to ask questions and learn about the company. The outcome from these visits are not only to build connections between employers and the students, but also to help the students understand all the different roles they will be qualified for with an ETC degree.

ETC Immersion Semester

Before the West Coast Trip, ETC students spend their first semester working on projects at Building Virtual Worlds and Visual Story, which form the backbone of an immersion semester designed to bring students up to professional-level speed quickly, and ensure their success in an ever-changing industry.

Building Virtual Worlds

Pioneered by ETC co-founder Randy Pausch, Building Virtual Worlds (BVW) challenges students to work quickly, creatively and collaboratively. Part of the immersion semester, BVW gives small teams of students two weeks to create a virtual world, with new groups and goals for each round. It all culminates in a public festival to hundreds of spectators – and an incredible sense of accomplishment. In fact, many BVW ideas go on to become full-time research projects, student spin-offs and commercial successes.

Visual Story

In Visual Story, students work in teams to write, produce, shoot and edit several visual story assignments. This class teaches essential skills for becoming a creative technological storyteller – how to think visually and aurally, as well as aspects of mise-en-scene, classical continuity-style coverage, transmedia, and temporal and spatial montage theory.
