Week 7 Newsletter

10/6 – 10/10

What We Did:

This week we just powered through our tasklog. We made lots of progress both from a technical and a creative standpoint. We also have just received this super sweet 3D printed camera rig from Epson for the BT-200 glasses. This will help a lot for showcasing our work on digital media websites as well allowing for spectators not using the device to see what is going on.

On the technical side, Mohit made huge strides on coding a plugin for Wit.AI to work in Unity and almost finished the task.Just a bit more time is needed to tweak the remaining bugs and finish polishing the code. Shirley made ARI integrated into our Unity build and wrote scripts that access those libraries. Wei created an application that accesses the google places api data and performs the text searches. We also tested the device with a bluetooth microphone and that worked really well, so we will in fact be able to use voice for our application.

From the creative sandpoint, Rex continued to iterate on concept art models for our companion. We are getting close to finding that sweet spot in model design, and have been making lots of progress in learning more about what is needed to make the companion an exciting one to be with. We now also have a much better plan for what we want to showcase for our demo at halves.

Challenges:

There have been a lot of challenges that have arisen in this past week as we have been progressing through the project. We have faced a lot of technical challenges which have delayed us a little bit, but we still are projected to be where we want to be for halves thanks to our buffer time. We are still struggling with figuring out what style we want our character to have and are continuing to iterate on character design. We really want our character to be able to convey emotional expressions through his model, animations and actions.

Plan For Next Week:

We plan to get our core features finished this week with a bit of user-testing and iteration time before our demo at halves. We are very excited to see people’s reactions to our application as well as how they try to break it :D!
