Week 2 Newsletter

9/1 – 9/5

What We Did:

This week we really tried to focus on exploring the BT-200 device and sharing our discoveries with our advisors.

Our programmers continued to explore the SDKs and capabilities of the various features of the device. Our artist got a running start on designing the logo, half-sheet and web banner. As a team, we are still searching for the idea that we plan to build and execute on.

We had a few team meetings to try to brainstorm where we wanted to take the technology. For this week, we underwent the initial rough internal pitch format. For the following week, we will tighten and polish up our pitches before we present them to our advisors.

The website was just created for our project on Friday and so by the end of the following week we should have all of our info up and running on the site.

Carl noted during our team meeting that the camera feed was both very distracting and immersion breaking since you are seeing real life twice. An ideal demo he urged us to try to build would involve disabling the camera feed while still rendering and keeping a virtual object steady. Our team has worked hard and managed to do just that which does drastically help to improve the AR experience.

Challenges:

This week we had a number of technical based challenges that we tried to overcome as a team. We had a bit of trouble getting Windows to detect the device to push Unity builds directly onto the device. Mohit and Shirley worked hard to discover the process to do so.

We are currently still evaluating if it is worth to use the Metaio SDK over the Vuforia SDK. There are some pros and cons with each sdk.

Getting voice detection to work on the device is still an ongoing struggle. We have discovered that for one of our two devices, the wiring is faulty for the microphone. Additionally, for the working device, we can only get the default microphone it came with to work, all third party microphones and wiring setups have not been successful yet. With Carl’s help, we are in the process of contacting Epson.

Our Plan For Next Week:

We will continue to explore and prototype out the features of the device and the sdk with regards to our pitch ideas. We will present our pitches to our advisors midway through the week and solicit feedback and work on next steps from there.
