theatre.exe is an ETC discovery project that is seeking a way to create a meaningful interactive experience by using technology as a vital, intrinsic part of a live performance. We are motivated by the emergence of interactivity in live theater and seek unexplored and compelling areas in the live interactive experience space. We are particularly interested in interactive theater that, beyond immersing guests in the performance, gives guests agency, or the capacity to influence the narrative in a significant way. We are curious as to the new possibilities that technology introduces as a possible solution to the challenge of guest agency in live performance.
In theater there are many types of experiences from immersive, to promenade, to interactive. These experiences are often misclassified under the wrong name. Our goal is to create a common taxonomy that would unify and standardize the language used in the theater industry. Through this we want to spark discussions about the importance of true agency in a live performance.
