An end to end solution to quickly and effectively visualize story

Week 11 – Hello Fincher!

NEW SCRIPT!

After building remote gold spike, the team is ready to dive in a new script! Week 11 is about reading through and picking scripts, and doing some script breakdown.

In this one, we aim for a sequence with clearer story events, relatively complex character relationships and potentials for interesting blocking and cinematography choices. After searching and reading, the team came up with 3 scripts that had potentials to do previsualization: the sci-fi adventure movie Ad Astra by James Gray, the dark-humor comedy movie Wild Tales by Damián Szifron, and the crime movie Se7en by David Fincher.

===============================================================================================

Arnav brought one of the opening scenes of movie Ad Astra. This is an establishing scene that contains rich details of the environment and tells a very cool setting. The emotion in this scene seems more to invoke is that of surprise, when Brad Pitt walks out and the camera pulls away to reveal where he actually is, with a larger than life view of the earth.

===============================================================================================

Angela brought one of the 6 stories from movie Wild Tales. The story is a full narrative all happening in an airplane cabin, telling about a revenge. Some of the decisions made by creators is pretty interesting, such as – the main character never shows up in the movie, not even his voice. The sequence uses heavy dialogues to help the audience understand story background.

===============================================================================================

Varun brought the ending scene of Se7en. It is an intriguing scene in which 2 cops are escorting the series killer and they receive an unpredictable “surprise” from him. The power switching between characters make this scene much more interesting to us.

===============================================================================================

As spoiled in the title of this blog, we finally chose the ending scene from Se7en by David Fincher! In the next few weeks, we are going to create our own version of this scene based on the script using our tools.

Then, we broke down the script and tried to understand what makes this scene so powerful. We picked the story elements and detail elements to ensure the basic information of the story. But the most important decisions for us, are gonna be how to show the power switching in this scene with our tools.

So next, we are going to talk about…

TOOL DEVELOPMENT (CAMERA)!

Last week, Kevin implemented the new menu with all our features well organized in it. The new design solves the frustration of unintended activation of teleporting or parameter adjusting. Here is the demo video:

Meanwhile, Shera kept working on visual design for the systems. Here’s our current UI design which we are going to implement in the future weeks:

Also, Kevin started working on depth of view of shots to enable creating more dynamic footages for our new script.
