Time goes so fast, I can’t believe this is the last week already.

In the final week, all ETC teams are required to do a 15-min presentation to the faculties, showing their project and answer questions. We usually do this in the RPIS at ETC building, but this year it’s a little harder to get there. So we are doing it in Zoom!

Preparation

To do a presentation, we need a slide. We divided the slides into four parts:

  • Overview
  • From halves to final (+ Demo)
  • Webapp Iterations
  • Tools & Documentation (+ Client testmonial)

To let the faculty know that our client is satisfied with our progress, and the tools work for them, we asked our client to send us a testimonial showing them using the tools. Megan, our client, sent a VERY GOOD video showing her using our tools. And we added it to our presentation

Challenges

We are doing the final presentation using Zoom, and the new platform brings new challenges.

First challenge: Screen Control

In Zoom, only one person can share the screen at a time, but all four of our teammates need to talk their part, and they want control of the screen to click to move to the next slides.

We tried two ways:

  • One person shares and control the screen, and the person who is presenting say “next slide please”
  • One person shares the screen but gives control to the person who is presenting using “Remote Control” in Zoom

The second way works much better than the first. It’s distracting and annoying to hear people say “next slide please” all the time. And it makes our presentation longer than the 15 min limit.

By giving remote control to the presenter, it takes a little time to get used to it, but it’s way more natural to the audience. So we choose this one.

Second Challenge: Demo

We want to do a live demo in our final presentation, and it’s a little challenge because our web app works on the phone, so we need to switch the screen to another presenter’s phone and share the screen of the phone, and switch it back afterward.

Nobody in our team has done this before, but we did some research and figured it out. We practiced a lot to make sure it’s as smooth as possible to our audience.

The Day of Presentation

Our presentation is on Thursday afternoon, and our client was so nice that they joined the Zoom with us. The team has already reshared it over and over, but we are still a little nervous, (except for Rongjia, he is VERY nervous).

But everything went well! The screen control switching was smooth, the demo worked, the client testimonial was powerful. And we answered the follow-up questions raised by our faculty. The team is very glad.

Next Step

We put everything that we think is valuable to a google drive folder and sent it to our client. With the presentation over, this project comes to an end – but not for everyone in the team!

As I mentioned in earlier posts, in the summer there will be another team working on this project, they will be testing the app and add features if they want. Well, our client hired two of our teammates, Rongjia and Ashley, to be interns for JHF in the summer, they will continue working on this project.

This is the last post for this blog. It’s been a wonderful semester for me. My teammates are awesome and very responsible, our instructors are smart and always full of good advice, and our client is very supportive. It’s a great learning experience.

I hope the Liftoff PGH 2020 goes well in December, and hope the team will have the chance to get together again!
