Week2

This was a short week due to Labor Day, but it was jam-packed with brainstorming. We began by developing a mindmap around the word lottery to begin generating some basic ideas. From there, we explored some of these related ideas more deeply in order to generate more concrete ideas. We also put together a survey for our classmates to get more diverse opinions on the lottery, games for change, and the idea of spending money on a game.

After that, we began focusing on coming up with specific prototype ideas. Two things were particularly helpful for this: First, the package containing sample scratch-off tickets from the NASPL arrived. Only one person on our team had ever played scratch-off tickets before, so actually getting to play a couple was very useful for helping the others see their appeal. Everyone really enjoyed them, and they were so addictive they actually nearly stalled the meeting!

The other thing that was helpful was watching a segment from the show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver that discussed the dark side of the lottery. This gave us a much better understanding of some of the problems with how the lottery is currently implemented, and the social stigma attached to it. As a result, we developed several principles that we believe will be critical in guiding our design principles going forward.

We also met with our advisers to discuss our prototype ideas. They were all generally well-received, and we got some useful feedback for when we present them to our client on Monday.
