Newsletter Week 3

Week 3 was the more or less a week of finding direction, we started off with another brainstorming session on Tuesday, where we decided some details and fleshed out our previous Cyber Detective idea, also, with our conference call with the FBI coming this Friday, we discussed the agenda and questions we were going to ask them.

We also came up with a series of data collection surveys that we will disseminate through our clients in Alice, and with some help from our advisor, John Dessler’s nieces and nephews.

Throughout the week we also created several brainstorming documents to share research, as well as continuously work on our website and logo. Both went through a series of iterative developments

We first came up with a first draft of the logo with a corresponding poster and half sheet. We received feedback from our peers at ETC that while the overall design was interesting, it wasn’t clear what the poster was representing and how it was representing Internet Safety. The logo was also black so it looked more ominous and creepy rather than friendly or protective. This feedback was very help in our revisions and you can compare our old designs to the new ones below.

On Friday we had a great conference call with our clients in FBI, Cyber Crimes Unity, Violent Crimes against Children section. We cleared a lot of doubts, as to where are the boundaries of our project, how much of a part the FBI will play, as well as how they envisioned the final product should be. That also left us a lot of doubt though, to start with, no one knows how to make a game for online teen safety, and all the materials are purely instructional, and difficult to make game components out of.

We also have a few more things  hammered out. For starters, due to this being a 2 year project, we need to make sure it was scalable from a software engineering perspective, the game and the curriculum were also independent of our game, so there were no strict syllabus for us to follow.

Finally, we locked up a travel date to DC, which would tentatively be March 1st.
