4. First Crunch Time, But We Have Something Working Now!

We are almost at quarters! Wednesday next week we will be showing our work to any interested employees from EA. We realised that it will probably be best to prototype a few different ideas and show all of them off to see which one garners the most interest from our playtesters. The first half of the week was deciding what the three prototypes will be about. We had quite a bit of information about what works with the Tango and what doesn’t, so we felt pretty confident about a few ideas.

We made very good technical progress too. Once we got textures onto the voxels, things looked much better! Putting the headset on and seeing a little minecraft world (complete with the original minecraft textures) that mirrored your actual room was quite an amazing experience. Now, we were increasingly convinced that something like this will actually work!

This had a direct positive impact on the design process, since our designers now had something concrete to look at while figuring out designs for the games.

We settled on three different ideas that we would make prototypes for –

  • A minecraft-style “Biome” game, where different parts of the world are different Biomes that the player can then explore.
  • A horror game where you sit in a chair with the headset on and are pushed by someone behind you. You see a creepy world with monsters and other generally creepy things and your task is to not look away!
  • A laser game where there are multiple lasers being beamed around you and you have to get to the other side without tripping any of the lasers.

We have made pretty good progress in each game, and are on track to have nicely working prototypes for quarters next week. We can’t wait to show it to veterans of the industry and see what they have to say about it!
