A new semester begins! This week we will start our new ETC semester project, working with our client, the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, to develop an interactive experience for attendees of Liftoff PGH 2020 to play at the event.

This week, 4 teammates met for the first time, and introduced ourselves to each other, and talked about our roles in this project.

Chang, a second-year student at ETC will be the producer in this team. Ashley, a second-year student at ETC will be the artist and designer. Rongjia Li and Shelley Xiao, two first-year students will be programmers in this team. We think we have a very strong team!

We named the project “Liftoff”. It means “(rocket) take off”, it’s also the theme for Liftoff PGH 2020, the conference that we’ll develop our app for. We hope our project can also “liftoff” and help the attendee at the conference!

We met with our client for the first time, Megan and Natalie from the Jewish Healthcare Foundation. They came to ETC and visited our project room. We had a productive meeting, to talk about what we’re going to build in the semester.

We learned a lot about the expectation for this project. Our client is going to host the “Liftoff PGH 2020” conference this September, and we’ll develop an app/website to help attendees better navigate the conference. The most important thing for this app/website is that it can make recommendations based on information the users entered, and be able to collect feedback from them. And ideally, players will remember the game after the conference.

And by the end of this semester, our goal is to finish developing and launch the app/website, it should be ready to play, or at least testable. It has online and offline parts. The online game can be a website or an app, we need to decide on that later. It has a survey and based on the questions answered by the user, we make recommendations to them, giving them a list of the booth they might want to check out. After they finish visiting all the recommended booth, they can gain access to a secret room. How cool is that!

Our client also showed the work from the team that was developing this project last semester, they did a lot of user research, and had some design ideas. Below is the UX flow that they designed. They also made some mock-up for the app. But the current design need more work, we’ll need to brainstorm and come up with new ideas, and do some re-design on the process.

We also met with our faculty instructors, John and Shirley from ETC. They are very nice and. They told us to start making a plan for the semester, think about how to playtest, and gave advice on how to better work as a team and some general suggestions for ETC projects.

We are all very excited about the project “Liftoff”! We’ve got a lot of work to do.
