Episode Five: Quarters

In our fifth week, the team prepared and presented at Quarters. Overall, our Quarters experience was positive and exciting for the team. We divided our presentation into six key sections: Tech & Design, Art, Animation, UI, Sound, and Production. Within each section, we showed the work we did in our pre-production phase and the work we had completed so far since beginning the semester.

The faculty’s response was positive. Most stated they were impressed with the amount of work we had gotten done before the summer and during the semester. We also had some really reassuring feedback from Jesse and Chris: both of whom said they thought our product was going in a surprising, unexpected direction (and they liked it)!

We also got some good feedback on our overall game presentation/language choice. Namely, that our game did not really fit with the term ‘whimsical’ and ‘playful’ was a better descriptor. The faculty’s feedback and impressions also fed into the team’s decision this week to pitch for a second semester. Multiple faculty members mentioned that they wanted other things to do with the Locanimals (other than battle), recalling our original pitch idea to do location-based minigames that facilitate social connections. With this feedback, we’ve decided to focus our next pitch on expanding our
game to explore this style of gameplay.

We also have been continuing to make steady progress with the game. The battle system is currently being developed, as are more UI elements, Locanimals, and sound effects. Now that Quarters is over and the team has recuperated, we will be aiming to push ourselves to return to our normal production pacing.
