Week 5 Newsletter — Spring 2014

Over the weekend our team attended an event our designer found on the Web called Logan’s run. Based on the 1976 movie, the game involved Sandmen chasing and taking lives from runners. Using this game and our talk with Adam Nelson, we wanted to take away some important notes for our game. One we found was that playing in streets is still a problem we have to fix. Players could be caught when reaching corners of streets, where the unfortunately couldn’t cross due to the lights being red!

Talking to Adam Nelson we also realized we’d have to do a lot of testing with mini games. We need to try and figure out if our mechanics will work, but it’s very tough to organize large tests every time. Therefore as our mechanics are up and running, we will test them concurrently with new mechanics being developed.

On Monday the team was still in the mode of pushing through the various tasks we had to do before our advisor meeting on Wednesday. Over the first few days of the week we pushed hard and managed to complete them all.

We needed to see ourselves and fellow players on the map and using Photon our programmers made it possible! Amongst this we had ability to draw a playing area onto the map and examples of the direction we are moving for UI.

Next week we are aiming for quarters presentations on Wednesday. Our team spent Thursday and Friday preparing for our rehearsal, as well as trying to get more tasks done. This turned out to be very difficult and the team ended up doing a lot of work on the presentation itself. Friday we rehearsed with the faculty and we received a lot of feedback to adjustments needed for the slides. Tuesday we rehearse again and we’ll be prepared, tuning us up for Wednesday’s final.

Enjoy the weekend! We will be rehearsing!
