Week2-Research on existing projects

Overview of Week2
  1. We tried three demos of Pupil and tried Ako(Some parts didn’t work, but we got the experience).
  2. Jamie worked on the branding design and here are several sketches she made(Attached).
  3. We continued research on articles and papers related to social interactions.
Research on existing projects

After we made clear about the goal of our project, we dived into the research process. We started with testing and research on what existed in the market. The first two demos we tried are Ako and Pupil.

Ako: http://www.etc.cmu.edu/projects/ako/
Ako is a Conversational Augmented Reality table-top game guide. Basically they focused on making a AR pet to teach players the rule of a table-top game. They have a great and inspiring animation for the little pet. And the little pet will respond to the player’s operation.

Pupil: https://www.etc.cmu.edu/projects/pupil/
Project Pupil’s goal is to create prototypes to imagine Augmented Reality (AR) interaction/design patterns for future classrooms. This means that at a low-level, we will explore the guest’s gesture language inside the future classroom, and at a high-level, we will find an AR interaction that enriches classroom learning. What we learned from Pupil was their smooth interaction feedback when the player was interacting with objects in the world. And also, they have a clear project goal is to improving the educational environment. What’s more, they divided their whole experience into three parts. It’s also the way we can show our social experience into three different themes.

Besides Ako and Pupil, we also researched on some other AR experience. Here some examples.

Some of the projects focus on the educational usage of AR technology. Such as combining books, games, toolbox with AR. Some of them focus on object visualization purposes in order to help their users to learn how to operate these complicated machines or cooperate together.

Other AR projects focus on making games. They dedicated to providing their players exciting and engaging game experience. We also find some projects are working on AR tools based on AR headsets and mobile AR features.

Find some directions

We found some directions we can go with during the research, e.g. Design(Industry design, fashion design, or art creation), product visualization, tutorial, travel, game(Sports game, Strategy game, fight game, Education game, simulation game, board game, AR pat), physical installations.
