Week 10

Week 10

Based on last week’s playtests, the team polished our design according to the feedback. This week, the team is concentrating on: programming, voiceover, rendering in 3d, and polishing our current version based on client’s feedback.

Interactive Design Based on Playtests

All of our playtesters are pointing to the same thing: they are expecting more agency and more interaction.

  • Would like more choices, engagement, or game feeling
  • Would like more surprising
  • Would like more challenge (opportunities to fail)
  • Would like feedback/explanation

As a result, we are adding two design features in the experience.

First, we want to add more interaction in the button click. Instead of pressing the button when they have no choice, the players are able to press button at any time they want. The player needs to wait to the correct moment when the virus is having direct contact on a contaminated surface to pass. If the player clicks the button to early or too late, the player will lose points.

Second, we are adding a mini map in the lower right corner to show that based on player’s choice, the virus is spreading more and more in the hospital.

Rendering in Maya

In order to fight against the programming constraint in our team, we are rendering the cinematic sequence in Maya and output videos to Unity.

Here are the steps:

1. Recreate the scene in Maya, setting up materials, and creating all the animations

2. Place the animation in the right order

3. Set up camera movement and render the video in Maya

4. Compositing: add voiceover and 2d effects in Premier

Due to NDA, we cannot share our full rendering here.

Voiceover

We are connecting to drama school students through professor Brenda to record our voiceover. Due to budget limitation, we are only hiring professional voice actor for our main virus chracter.

Polishing Hand Washing Mini Interaction

Based on our client’s feedback, we added details of education message in the hand washing mini interaction.

In the interaction, we are adding icons of each hand washing procedures, educational message on the upper left corner, and virus survival rate on the upper right corner.

After the interaction, we are giving educational message based on the player’s choice in the game.
