Dailies 1-18-11

  • Had a team meeting, and finalized on the design for two games of the first level. Decided on ‘ballistics’ and ‘prints’ for the theme.
  • Also decided on game mechanics and interfacing for ‘ballistics’ so that we can start working on assets and code.
  • Researched on the type of gun to be used and found one for reference.

For tomorrow, we have to start modeling the assets, basic ones to start with and turn them over to the programmers for testing.

Today we had a productive design meeting for our first level (beginner) mini-games.  We settled on doing a pair of pattern-matching games based on forensic ballistics and fingerprinting, respectively.  I spent some time doing additional research into ballistics to support design of the former.

I also reviewed Heavy Metal’s Cost Benefits Analysis of game engines, and based upon their findings Unity still appears to be an appropriate choice for our project.  We especially like the fact that Unity is well equipped to handle web and mobile applications, both of which may prove useful to us and to our client.

Sophie and I spoke about the sound design for the games.

Finally, I also spent a little time looking into some important producer skills, since I am new to the role.

Design Meeting

Today the team covered several topics for use in our “Level 1” games including: Fingerprints, DNA, Ballistics, Blood Splatter, Time of Death, and Phone Records. After much discussion, it was determined that Blood Splatter and Time of Death push to be more complex than we wanted to have in the “Level 1” games; they will be reconsidered for the next levels. We also decided that DNA and Phone records might prove to be too simple. So, in conclusion we are going to have a Ballistics comparison game that will simulate comparing bullets under a microscope and a Fingerprint comparison game where users will match prints on evidence with print on file for suspects/victims.

Here’s some inspiration for our Ballistics game using comparison microsopes!

Today

  • Worked on team Poster design.
  • I researched different techniques regarding fingerprints and how they are collected and analyzed in forensics.
  • Continued work on project website, Team page is nearly completed.
  • Participated in a team “design” meeting to discuss the research we had all covered for possible Level 1 topics.

Tomorrow

  • Continue work on Poster and Half-sheet design
  • Continue work on website
  • More design on Level 1 game interfaces

Action items performed today:

  • Had a team meeting on the first two game prototype and design
  • The two areas of forensics namely, ballistics analysis and prints matching were decided to be focus of first 2 games.
  • Working on design of the interface and game mechanics

Started today with a  phone, we talked to Dr. Lee and had a meeting with him. It’s very exciting to talk to him.  Basically, we got the concept and direction from him.

At 3:45p.m., we had a team meeting. We try to figure out the structure and the length of our game. And we got some really good website as reference.

We need to do some deep research for conceptualizing easy level(analyst) game mechanic today and discuss it more tomorrow.

Team CSI stands for “Crime Scene Innovation”!!! Alright, finally everyone from the team is on board, not that I am the last one but I felt really bad that I missed lots of mini meetings because my conflict of schedules.

Anyway, first thing first. We had a conference call with Dr. Lee who is kindly to spend his 30 minutes lunch time with us to talked about visions he has. The results are similar to what we address in last week’s meeting (which I wasn’t able to attend). We’ve another meeting with team members this afternoon to go over with everyone’s note and everyone’s research about this project. It had been a very productive day as a team.

Tonight’s assignment, research for “Phone records cross matching technique and etc.”.

Next meeting is at 1pm, thanks for everyone arranging their schedule to match mine. Thanks guys, I’ll re-arrange it too. 🙂

Had a client call and talked to Dr. Lee. Later, we had a schedule and design meeting, decided on a team name, game structure, tentative project timeline and other details. Worked on my transition from 3Ds max to Maya for the project, familiarizing with the interface. For tomorrow, I have to research on DNA pattern matching for conceptualizing easy level(analyst) game mechanic.

Today we spoke with Dr. Lee about his expectations for the project and cleared up many of our questions so that we could get started on designing.  Afterward I e-mailed Dr. Lee as we discussed to get contact information for other people at New Haven who would be able to work with us as the project progresses.  Later in the afternoon, the team had a schedule and design meeting to discuss core hours, the team name, our direction and goals over these next few weeks, and a tentative schedule for the entire semester.
